Front of House Assistant Manager
The Front of House Assistant Manager is a new position at BKLYN CLAY. We are looking to hire someone to start May 1 or May 15, 2025.
About the Role
BKLYN CLAY is seeking a Front of House Assistant Manager to serve as key operational staff at our ceramic studios. This role includes operational duties, assisting the management team in FOH oversight and scheduling, serving as a vital link between studio operations and customer experience, as well as studio logistics like janitorial services, order fulfillment, and more.

Hire Freelance Staff for Specific Duties (FOH Assistants)

Customer Service & Studio Operations
Serve as primary point of contact for studio visitors, providing exceptional customer service and maintaining a welcoming environment
Conduct studio tours and provide comprehensive information about BKLYN CLAY's classes, workshops, and membership
Process and fulfill orders for the in-person shop and webstore through Shopify
Handle student and member inquiries with expertise and professionalism
Receiving outside firing work and ensure it is submitted following all protocols
Searching for misplaced student and member work
Conducting new member orientations
Troubleshooting our firing fee system and communicating with the rest of our team when something is out of order
Maintaining studio administrative equipment
Front of House Team iCal management
Inventory Management
Monitor and maintain inventory levels for:
Studio supplies (tools, cleaning supplies)
Retail items (merchandise, beverages, snacks, commercial glazes, clay for resale)
Administrative supplies
Coordinate with Operations Coordinator to place orders and manage stock transfers between locations
Help to define and maintain inventory management systems
Conduct regular inventory audits and report discrepancies
Update and verify that inventory listed on Shopify is consistent with our internal counts
Occasional off-site trips to our storage facility to receive shipments and assess off-site inventory
Facility Maintenance
Perform daily cleaning of all studio areas including:
Putting out fresh towels for studio use and bagging dirty laundry for pickup
Thorough cleaning of bathrooms and kitchen
Returning misplaced items to their proper location
Cleaning of common areas and workspace surfaces
Dusting and organizing retail areas
Trash and Recycling (emptying throughout the day and ensuring it’s taken out for pickup according to the schedule)
Wiping down sinks and removing clay in the drain
Guide and participate in deeper cleaning projects as needed (this includes quarterly cleaning days at both locations)
Monitor facility conditions and report maintenance needs
Ensure studio is prepared for private classes and events through timely cleaning and setup
Organize and maintain Lost and Found on a regular basis
Organizing Outside Firing, Hospital and Glaze pickup areas and disposing of work left past its pickup deadline
Reclaiming work left on Overflow shelves for more than two weeks
Private Lessons, Parties, Workshops, and Events
Monitor workshop registration and attendance
Create a welcoming environment by setting up classrooms for events and classes with appropriate tools.
Give advance notice to students and members when an area of the studio will not be available
Proactively offer to sell snacks and beverages (including beer and wine)
Process payment for additional work kept beyond what is included in the lesson.
Process work after private lesson by following all procedures, including:
Proper documentation of work at every stage of processing
Trimming wheel thrown work
Glazing
Packaging for pickup
Required Qualifications
Experience managing or assisting a manager, or arts administration qualifications
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Experience in customer service
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, in person and remotely
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, in person and via email/text/Slack
Physical ability to stand for extended periods, climb a vertical ladder, and lift up to 50 lbs regularly
Availability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends at both our Prospect Heights and Tribeca locations
Experience throwing ceramics on the wheel, trimming ceramic work and glazing ceramics
Preferred Qualifications
Previous retail or studio management experience
Knowledge of inventory management systems
Experience with Shopify or similar e-commerce platforms
Proficiency with Shopify point-of-sale systems and Google Suite (especially Google sheets)
Studio Technician
BKLYN CLAY is in search of ceramic technicians, the application period is rolling and the review process will be carried out as positions become available. All applications will be saved and reviewed when technician positions are available candidates will be contacted directly.
Responsibilities
Mix and replenish clay
Mix and replenish glaze, slips, and washes
Load and unload kilns
Unload clay deliveries, keep stock organized
Answer student/faculty inquiries and questions
Inform Studio Managers of any issues or concerns in a timely manner
Clean facilities thoroughly
Perform other projects as assigned by Studio Managers or Lead Technician
Qualifications
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Ability to work independently and determine priorities when multiple tasks must be completed
Ability to remain on task and not allow oneself to be distracted by the active studio environment
Experience with kiln loading, glaze mixing, clay mixing (preferably with pugmills)
Experience with ceramic fabrication (mold-making, glazing, and handbuilding skills are a plus)
Strong interest to work in the field of ceramics
Ability to repeatedly lift 50 lbs without assistance
Ability to communicate effectively with students, instructors, members, and the public and act as an ambassador to the studio

STUDIO ACCESS / BENEFITS
Studio Technicians working at least 20 hours per week will be able to access the studio for personal projects during non work hours. They will receive $100 month in firing fees and shelf space for storage.

Pay: $20/hr
Description: Assist with daily technical operations of BKLYN CLAY such as mixing clay, glaze, and loading kilns. Cleaning of facilities including sweeping, mopping, and operating a floor cleaner.
Ceramics Instructors

Qualifications
Degree in art or relative experience working in ceramics
Previous teaching experience is helpful but not required, instructors should have the ability to do the following:
Demonstrate a thorough understanding and honed craft for working with clay.
Present clear instruction to students and adjust to accommodate learning styles.
Communicate effectively with students, staff, and the public and act as an ambassador to the studio.
Keep students on track throughout the semester and hold them accountable to meet firing deadlines.
Gauge student interest and adjust to address special topics.
Manage student expectations and help identify realistic goals.
Hours: Dependent on openings (each class runs 3 hours, private lessons are 2 hours)

Description: Instructors will introduce students to the ceramic process covering essential material information at each stage so that students gain an understanding of the wide range of possibilities when working with clay. Beginning level classes will focus on fundamental skill building and developing a sensitivity for the working properties of clay. Intermediate and advanced courses will allow for further development of techniques and include more complex demonstrations. Intermediate and advanced level instructors will guide students as they expand their skill set and begin to identify personal projects.

Adhere to class schedule, punctuality is critical so that class begins and ends on time.
Adhere to studio wet work and firing deadlines and hold students accountable.
Uphold studio cleaning procedures with your students.
Provide essential information on studio equipment and submitting work for firing.
Report any issues with management in a timely and constructive manner.
